this is THE month.
the tamil month of Aadi. mid july to mid august. the saying goes 'aadi pattam, theydi vithai' - in the season of aadi, just plant anything.
we had chosen the well at the place of future 'acre-sized' farming. and in that location, we had cleared up around 1/3rd of an acre (approx).
we got it ploughed and ready. this was in addition to the other fields that we have used earlier for groundnuts, ragi, varagu, etc.
here is the list.
1. foxtail millet - thinai (2 varieties - yellow and red)
2. pearl millet - kambu (bajra) - 2 varieties (hybrid and native)
3. sorghum - chozham (jowar) - 2 varieties - white and red
4. rice - 2 native varieties - wadan samba and maduvu muzhangi
5. little millet - samai
6. ragi
7. kodo millet - varagu
8. groundnut
and they were interplanted with
9. cow pea - karamani
10. toor dal - tuvarai
11. gongura - pulicha keerai
12. horse gram - kollu
totally rain-fed only.
like a charm it rained 2 days and 10 days (yesterday) after planting. one more in the next 20 days should be enough to take it through.
and tons of veggie varieties too.
and trees are still waiting for their turn. gotta go.

Good to know & all the best for good harvest. In my area no rain for the last 3 months adi perukku also gone, i am an worried farmer.
How is the rain water harevesting going?
Are the swales helpful and is the rain water being chenneled into the well?
way to go! thinai sounds very inviting.
kannan - ouch... where are you? tirunelveli?
kishore - RWH should be completed this year. well is still not connected to RWH. planning to do that too this year. once done, we expect a high level of recharge each year. but how this is actually helping us or the local wells cannot be estimated objectively.
nisha - very tasty too. andhra has over half a dozen varieties.
the wonder mill we have is very good at removing the outer skins of thinai. seeds when you get here :-)
Have you considered Aquapoincs to grow food at the farm ?

I saw in some pics of construction of house in the background a wind mill, I guess it is for lifting water? if I am right, could you please tell us about how it was constructed as it will help us...also photos of windmill will be very much appreciated.
v - nothing really more to add.
damodar - it is a water pump. the details of it are on www.pointreturn.org.
there are many posts with photos of the windmill. dont have the bandwidth to list them here. you could do a search on the blog.
